Nocturno primero
First Nocturne
Ed è subito sera — S. Quasimodo Night is the threat of nothingness emerging, it envelopes me at last, I recognize myself orphaned, alone with my remembrance. At this time only memories help me: the façade of my house and I, still a child, imagining the world extending beyond the opposite walls. My mother’s songs when the sun takes its leave above the courtyards’ fronds and the deserted streets. There my amazement my schoolboy inventions the cobblestones that I walk on the sea a life sought for, but always alien adventure from the books. You, unconcerned with my papers, free as the music that night spreads, daring and foggy lad mathematics student blond athlete. You, in the slopes of the night with your classroom song. You, in the city sordid bars at the entrance of movie houses dazzled by theater lighting lost in hotels. You, impassive, riding nude nude and untouchable upon the prow of time. Night has found me stopped in the silent confinement of the books putting my games in order. My mother smiles at me out of a picture from fifty years ago, my fictions are lined up and my history is only a few names that are hurting me. The night doesn't go by, it is itself the key of myths beginning of sleep, and also its end, it is repeated darkness craving more darkness, summon of zero. I am subdued by it, demanding its cool wave its silent horn its needle its weightless matter... I want to enter the night without remembrance, just with the poem. Translated by Josefina Trelles. Beaux Arts To Germán Puig That man who stretches out his fishing pole on the bank of the Seine with his pipe and his dog and his tilted beret absorbed in the midafternoon flooded with yellow and blue, is he actually fishing or is posing for me pretending that he fishes and so enlivening a childhood landscape? Empty, the road edging the powerful buttress of the river, I find no one to share my joy and my amazement in realizing one can escape through a picture in a book. From Casi de memorias (Coral Gables, Blue Bird Editions, 2008) y Estancia en los sentidos (Madrid, Biblioteca Nueva, 2018). Translated by Josefina Trelles. To know my story To Orlando Coré To know my story you would have to imagine a shady patio a jasmine shrub and all the kindness of those looms in small towns of yore. Mother reciting —as if they were prayers-- fragments of poems and Auntie dreaming and telling her dreams. In order to understand what I am now you have to imagine and afternoon, and the rain washing down the façades of very old houses and the raw man-smell of father's clothes. You would have to go through That pile of yellow books with austere prints while in the twilight there’s talk of premonitions and a guerrilla voiceis is thundering the streets and transforming —even if we don’t know-- the countenance of the world. From Casi de memorias (Coral Gables, Blue Bird Editions, 2008) y Estancia en los sentidos (Madrid, Biblioteca Nueva, 2018). Translated by Ileana Fuentes. |
