The Black Opal Series
by Basil King
by Basil King
In 2019 into 2020 I did fifty portrait variations all called "Looking for the Green Man." After that, I didn’t want to do another portrait. I wanted to do something quiet, possibly beautiful, a place of meditation.
Shown here are six paintings from 2020: three from the Black series and three from the Black Opal series. By April 2021, I've made 49 paintings in series of Circles, Oblongs, Squares, Blacks, and Black Opals.
The paintings are done in mixed media. I used charcoal, library colored chalks,
light soft molding paste, and turpentine applied with fingers, pallet knife, or paper towels.
