Welcome to Issue 9, Volume II
A Word of Re-Introduction
Old Joshua commanded the children to shout
And the walls came tumbling down. Well, in this case, nothing quite so dramatic, merely a name change. But we’re confident you’ll find Witty Partition as well-stocked with literary and visual bounty as ever was The Wall – viz.: Antología de Bolsillo, Parte 1 / Pocket Anthology, Part 1: contemporary Latin American poets living in New York City and writing in Spanish – with Part 2 to appear in Witty 10. We are grateful to Marithelma Costa for her extraordinary work in curating this collection. Our serialization of Becoming, Chris Sawyer Lauçanno’s fascinating, and frankly witty memoir continues with new chapters. This issue’s Portfolio offers a mini-gallery of vibrant recent paintings by New York artist Frank Shifreen. Editor Bronwyn Mills has contributed the second installment in her essay series Flights of the Fabulous, as well as her meditation on an extraordinary ballet staging of Giselle. We are also delighted to present three poems by denise h bell and a Remarkable Read by Dana Delibovi on a new book by poet Carl Phillips. Yours truly’s Feuilleton concerns a writer who may be Mechanical, but surely isn’t Rude. All this plus a ¡VIVA! celebrating Behrouz Boochani’s release from Manus Island detention, three InSights and a droll Colophon. One can almost hear Shakespeare’s Duke of Athens asking – with reference to the original witty partition: “Would you desire lime and hair to speak better?”* — Eric Darton for the Editors
* Readers wishing further explication of the origin of our new name may refer to the Mechanicals’ play-within-a-play in Act 5 of A Midsummer Night’s Dream
